NORTHAMPTON, MA /ACCESSWIRE/November 16, 2022/ From Field to Market: The Sustainable Agriculture Alliance™ honored the winners of the 2022 Sustainable Leadership Awards on the eve of the eighth annual Sustainable Agriculture Summit. Now in its sixth year, the awards – billed as the cornerstone of the Alliance’s fall meeting – are given to farmers, organizations and individuals who have shown outstanding leadership through their efforts to make advance the continuous improvement of the sustainability of staple crop production in the United States.

The recipients of the 2022 Sustainability Leadership Awards are:

  • 2022 Farmer of the Year: Kelly Garrett, 6 years olde Generation Farmer, Arion, Iowa

Recognized for his outstanding conservation efforts on his farm and his leadership in promoting sustainable agriculture, Kelly Garrett has been honored as Field to Market’s 2022 Farmer of the Year. Owning and operating Garrett Land & Cattle in Arion, Iowa, Garrett farms approximately 7,000 acres of corn and soybeans, and raises approximately 500 head of cattle in his cow-calf herd, all with a strong spirit of conservation and a desire to help others do the same. Garrett includes a long list of sustainable practices on his farm, from no-till and cover crops to drip irrigation and variable-rate fertilizer applications.

The Farmer of the Year award celebrates Garrett’s commitment to continuous improvement, not only for himself but also for the peers he helps along the way. Primarily through XtremeAg, a platform co-founded by Garrett to connect with real farmers from across the United States who are committed to making sustainability improvements, he often shares with other farmers the benefits of tools and practices he uses.

Recognizing outstanding cross-industry collaboration and partnership, the 2022 Collaboration of the Year Award recognizes ADM, PepsiCo, Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI), Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP), and Farmers Business Network (FBN) (new to the partnership in 2022) for their collective efforts to advance the sustainability of corn and soybeans in Nebraska.

Enrolled in Field to Market’s Continuous Improvement Accelerator™, this project brought together cross-industry organizations and competitors to continuously improve productivity, profitability and environmental outcomes for farmers, through direct contribution of funds to provide technical assistance to growers. and subsidizing cover crop seeds.

  • 2022 Trusted Advisor of the Year: Beatriz Moreno-García, postdoctoral researcher, University of Arkansas

By combining innovative regenerative practices with locally rooted strategies to strengthen on-farm conservation, each of this year’s winners demonstrates the power of creative collaborations to advance the Alliance’s collective efforts to shape a more resilient and sustainable food system. .

“Congratulations to each of our three winners – their leadership in continuously improving environmental outcomes for agriculture is a powerful example of how we all have a role to play in advancing sustainability across the agricultural value chain” , said Scott Herndon, president of Field to Market. . “We commend Kelly Garrett, Beatriz Moreno-García, and partners involved in the Supporting Nebraska Farmers to Boost Resiliency Via Cover Cropping project, for their dedication to advancing the sustainability of American agriculture.”
