On a day when Javagal Srinath, ICC India’s elite panel umpire, and BCCI chief executive MV Sridhar inspected the Ekana International Cricket Stadium, the only man worried was chief curator Daljeet Singh .

While Srinath and Sridhar along with the directors of Ekana Sports City continued to inspect every thing available at the stadium to confirm ICC accreditation, Daljeet was busy managing the 22-meter strip in the middle.

“It won’t be a fast and bouncy wicket as usual as we couldn’t get enough time to make it perfect for the four-day game, especially the season-opening Duleep Trophy,” Daljeet told HT, adding, “It was BCCI that decided so late. It’s nobody’s fault.”

Just last week, four days after removing the Duleep Trophy from the 2017-18 national calendar, the BCCI was forced to reverse its decision and reinstate it last Tuesday after the Committee of Administrators (CoA) appointed by the Supreme Court asked him to keep it. as an important tournament in the itinerary of the new season.

“It would have been better if we were given 10 to 15 extra days. We could have organized some local matches to prepare the surface,” said Daljeet, who also happens to be the former head of the pitch and field committee of BCCI.

“It’s a tough decision to have a four-day game in the season opener at this ground. Fingers crossed,” he said. “The conduct of a few local matches as well as other dressing work could have made the surface come alive. I hope that gradually the ground will have bounce and rhythm. It would be a whole different field when the final game of the Duleep Trophy takes place here on the last week of this month.

He did, however, claim that a generous grass on the pitch would help new bowlers do well at first, but overall it would be a slow surface, which was good for the batting. “We will have much better ground in the next 20 days. The red ground here has a different character,” Singh said.

“For the moment, it’s equal for everyone after a rainy season and no particular work on its dressing. But once a few games are played here, the red ground will have a different character to play. We hope for a good turnaround even in the first game, ”he added.
