Can Elon Musk deliver higher standards of free speech and better moderation of content on Twitter and make it “a digital public square where a wide range of beliefs can be debated” as he claims? Or will he be under intolerable pressure to remove critical content from various governments, for fear of punitive action targeting Tesla, Starlink and SpaceX – the biggest companies he also controls? Although Mr. Musk has spoken about free speech, his interests will make it difficult to sequester his other companies’ social media platform and resist government pressure to selectively censor Twitter. Additionally, if there is any truth to the claim that it intends to make big layoffs, the platform may struggle to face potential competition from newcomers like Bluesky, the decentralized social network recently launched by the Twitter founder Jack Dorsey. Bluesky has somewhat similar functionality to Twitter while being decentralized.
